What will I learn?

The Operating with Respect course provides advanced training in recognising, managing and preventing discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment.

The aim of this course is to equip surgeons with the ability to self-regulate behaviour in the workplace and to moderate the behaviour of colleagues, in order to build respect and strengthen patient safety.

The course follows the release of the RACS Action Plan on Discrimination, Bullying and Sexual Harassment in the Practice of Surgery.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  1. Appraise why a culture of respect matters
  2. Evaluate behaviours that support respectful environments
  3. Recognise the importance of resilience in maintaining respectful interactions
  4. Practise how to address unacceptable behaviours

Eligibility

The Operating with Respect course is mandatory and required to be completed by the end of 2018 by the following:

  • SET Surgical Supervisors
  • IMG Clinical Assessors
  • College office bearers
  • Members of Training boards
  • RACS Major Committees

The course is also available to Fellows and IMGs. Priority access to the course will be given to participants required to complete the course by the end of 2018.

Program

One day course: 8.15am - 4.00pm

Participants will engage with course content through facilitated discussions, small group activities and role-play. Participants are required to complete the Operating with Respect eLearning module prior to their attendance at course.
