What will I learn?

The Operating with Respect course provides advanced training in recognising, managing and preventing discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment.

The aim of this course is to strengthen patient safety by enabling participants to develop skills in respectful behaviour and practice strategies in responding to unacceptable behaviour.

The course follows the release of the RACS Action Plan on Discrimination, Bullying and Sexual Harassment in the Practice of Surgery.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate the role of respect in patient safety and individual and team performance
  • Recognise unacceptable behaviour in its various forms
  • Identify factors that influence a culture of respect
  • Describe behaviours that support a culture of respect
  • Develop skills in addressing unacceptable behaviours


The Operating with Respect course is mandatory and required to be completed by the end of 2018 by the following:

  • SET Surgical Supervisors
  • IMG Clinical Assessors
  • College office bearers
  • Members of Training boards
  • RACS Major Committees

The course is also available to Fellows and IMGs. Priority access to the course will be given to participants required to complete the course by the end of 2018. 


No enrolment fee


One day course: 8.30am - 4.30pm

Participants will engage with course content through facilitated discussions, small group activities and role-play. Participants are required to complete the Operating with Respect eLearning module prior to their attendance at course.
