Dr. Catherine Banks graduated from Auckland Medical School, completing her first years of training at Whangarei Base Hospital in New Zealand. She moved to Sydney to commence her ENT surgical training in NSW. During this time she spent 12 months training in paediatric ENT at both Westmead and Sydney Children’s hospital. She completed her final year at Prince of Wales and Sydney Eye Hospital. The anatomy of the skull base and delicate nasal surgery became her passion, developing excellent skills, enthusiastically willing to learn and gaining knowledge from many highly respected surgical experts.

During her ENT training, she gained unwavering direction as well as clinical and academic expertise. Well complemented by her inherent compassion, humility and the constant need to understand the predicament and values each individual patient presents. She has a relentless commitment to strive to deliver best care to patients, contribute academically to the scientific community and to mentor future Otolaryngology residents. In 2015 she became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery.

Catherine then furthered her surgical training by obtaining two fellowships in world class leading internationally recognised centres of excellence. Following completion of her American examinations she headed abroad to complete 2 fellowships in Anterior Skull Base and Rhinology in the United States of America. Her first fellowship was under the mentorship of Dr. Brad Woodworth, widely considered the world expert in rhinology and cystic fibrosis. Dr Woodworth leads an extremely complex and high volume anterior skull base department, at the University of Birmingham in Alabama. The following year she was selected as the 1st Australasian Fellow in  Rhinology and Skull Base at the prestigious Harvard Medical School / Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary under the mentorship of Dr Ralph Metson, Dr Ben Bleier, Dr Stacey Gray and Dr Eric Holbrook. This broadened her surgical expertise to include orbital and lacrimal surgery. These fellowships represent the pinnacle of her training, embracing all the elements of expertise in surgery, patient care, academia and mentorship.

A legacy of mentors in Catherine’s field of rhinology have lead by example, and have instilled the importance of compassion, humility and the constant need to achieve the highest quality of patient care and outcomes. Catherine is currently working at the Prince of Wales Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital. Her extensive surgical knowledge and experience is cultivated through the provision of expert patient care and evidence-based medicine.
