Dr Victor Kong
Overview
Victor is a Consultant Trauma Surgeon at Auckland City Hospital and Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Raised in Hong Kong, he completed his medical degree in New Zealand and undertook surgical training in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and South Africa. He obtained Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MRCS), followed by a Master of Surgical Sciences (MSc) and a Master of Surgery (ChM) from the University of Edinburgh, graduating both with distinction, and was awarded the British Journal of Surgery Prize.
Victor’s training in high volume trauma centres over the ensuing years enabled him to amass a wealth of clinical experience while developing his academic interest. He pursued his passion for trauma surgery at the University of KwaZulu Natal in Durban, South Africa, where he successfully completed a PhD, and obtained an MD at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Returning to New Zealand to complete his specialist training in general surgery, he became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and embarked on subspeciality training in trauma surgery in Auckland, becoming the first surgeon in New Zealand to complete the ANZAST programme. Subsequently, he completed an international fellowship at the world-renowned Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Canada, and worked at Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg, one of the world’s largest and busiest trauma centres.
Throughout his career, Victor has been dedicated to trauma research and education, having authored over 200 publications (H-Index: 31) and delivered over 70 conference presentations. His research interests include selective management of penetrating torso trauma, complex multi-system trauma and operative trauma training. He is a senior ATLS instructor and is actively involved in the training and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students both locally and internationally.
