Dr Peter Newton

Overview

Dr Peter Newton graduated from the University of Melbourne with honours. He completed general surgery training through the Austin and Northern Hospitals in Melbourne. Subsequent to this he completed a year as a Breast and General Surgery Fellow at the Northern Hospital before being accepted onto the formal Post Fellowship Training Program with the Breast Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand. It was during this time at Wollongong Hospital and then Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth that Peter was trained in all aspects of modern breast cancer surgery. This includes implant based reconstruction for patients requiring a mastectomy and also oncoplastic surgery (applying advanced techniques to optimise the aesthetic outcome following breast cancer surgery and to lower the likelihood of requiring a mastectomy).

Peter also has an interest in working closely with plastic surgeons to apply preventative techniques to decrease the risk of lymphoedema (swelling in the arm which is a potential complication following surgery). During his time at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth he was instrumental in introducing this procedure which resulted in it being performed for the first time in Australia in a public hospital.
Peter consults at Melbourne Breast Unit in East Melbourne, operating at Epworth Freemasons and Epworth Richmond. Peter also holds a public appointment as a Consultant Breast and General Surgeon at the Austin Hospital.
