National Definitions for Elective Surgery Urgency Categories

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) and the College have jointly reported to the Standing Council on Health on National Definitions for Elective Surgery Urgency Categories (1024 KB). This report follows from a request from the Council of Australian Governments for the AIHW to work with the College to propose national definitions and a package of measures that will produce greater consistency for elective surgery urgency categories for all Australian public hospitals, enabling consistent application across all states and territories. The report was informed by extensive consultation with College Fellows, representatives of Australian governments, health consumer groups and other stakeholders. This collaborative work has been an excellent example of involvement of the College in Government policy development. Further information is available on the Australian Institute of Health & Welfare website.

HPS Report - Impact of the changing role of private health insurers on clinical autonomy

December 2015 - RACS commissioned Health Policy Solutions to provide a report into private health insurers in Australia and New Zealand so as to better understand how changing priorities might impact upon the clinical autonomy of surgeons. At the core of this project are fundamental questions about the extent to which health insurers should actively engage in purchasing to influence the appropriateness, quality and safety of private health services and how such a role interacts with the traditional paradigm of clinical autonomy for medical practitioners.
