RACS Victorian State Committee's Preparation for Practice workshop on 22 and 23 July will cover establishing your practice and navigating your digital responsibilities.
Cyber-attacks seem to have become commonplace over the last 12 months. While large companies make the news—think Optus, Medibank and Latitude—data tells us that small to medium businesses (52 per cent) will most likely be targeted by ransomware attacks. According to the Australian Government's Report Cyber data, one cybercrime was reported every eight minutes in the year 2020 – 2021. Even worse, it is said that the healthcare sector is the second most targeted industry.
Large amounts of patient information, including medical histories, personal information, and financial details, make healthcare an attractive target. Ransomware attacks allow hackers to infiltrate data systems, possibly encrypt critical data and may lead to the demand for a ransom to resume regular business. Vulnerabilities such as weak security measures, outdated software, and lack of cybersecurity awareness among staff make the health system susceptible to such attacks. This may interrupt patient care and cause the loss of patient medical information; the risk to patient information and professional reputation can be significant.
This is a big issue, as are the ramifications of an attack, but what can you do to mitigate these risks and keep the attackers out?
Join the Victoria State Committee for the 2023 Preparation for Practice workshop—the whole weekend or just day 2, titled Navigating your digital responsibilities.
