Norman Winislow Thompson HON FRACS
Endocrine Surgeon

Norman Thompson was Emeritus Professor of Surgery of the University of Michigan, where he had been chief of the prestigious Division of Endocrine Surgery from1979 until his retirement from clinical practice in 2001. His teaching and lecturing activity continued while he remained physically able.
He was a leader, an exceptional surgeon and was a deeply revered by endocrine surgeons across the globe.
His contributions were manifold and his foresight in managing hormonal activity and functional imaging led to significant advances in the management of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 1.(MEN 1). He contributed to basic knowledge and care in many fields of endocrine pathology. His surgical courage, precise understanding of anatomy when coupled with his confidence, marked the calibre of the man.
He was awarded Honorary Fellowship in the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1999.
The award was supported by all members of the Endocrine Surgery Section of the College at that time.
Dr Thompson's visits to Australia were keenly anticipated by surgeons, as he was a brilliant teacher .His teaching at all levels from undergraduates to practising surgeons , be it at the bedside in class or in the operating theatre was highly valued.
Norman was a humble, warm and friendly man who loved people and worked indefatigably for his patients.
He suffered severe restriction over his last several years with courage, tenacity and good humour and great forbearance.
All in the College who came to know him were enriched by the experience.
