The RACS 92nd Annual Scientific Congress (ASC) 2024, held at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, Ōtautahi Christchurch in Aotearoa New Zealand, was by all accounts, an unparalleled success, solidifying its status as the premier event in the College's calendar. With around 1500 in-person delegates attending, it is the largest multidisciplinary English-language surgical gathering in the southern hemisphere — a testament to its significance to the medical community.

The RACS ASC served as a platform for some of the most brilliant minds in medicine worldwide to converge, and share their research, insights, and expertise. The ASC also hosts the convocation ceremony where 144 new Fellows were inducted into the College. Dean and head of campus at the University of Otago, Professor Suzanne Pitama's Syme Oration added a poignant touch to the ceremony, setting the tone for the induction of new members and honouring the longstanding contributions of existing Fellows.

Throughout the week, delegates had a wealth of learning and networking opportunities, with an extensive program comprising more than 900 presentations, lectures, keynote speeches, and events. From plenary sessions to presentations by section visitors, named lecturers, and invited speakers, the Congress was a hub of intellectual exchange and innovation.

It wasn't all work though and delegates had a chance to engage in various social activities, including a fun run in Hagley Park and a morning yoga session. The Congress also hosted thematic breakfast functions celebrating Indigenous Health, Women in Surgery, and the Christian Medical Fellowship — highlighting the diverse interests of our members. Additionally, the 11 section dinners provided networking opportunities, fostering collaboration and camaraderie among colleagues.

As always, the trade exhibition hall proved to be a popular attraction, offering delegates the chance to interact with industry suppliers and explore the latest advancements in surgical technology and practice.

The week culminated in the Congress Dinner provided a fitting conclusion to the week-long festivities, with 400 delegates reflecting on their experiences in Ōtautahi Christchurch with their peers while enjoying the city's finest culinary offerings.

Preparations are underway for the 2025 RACS ASC in Sydney, Australia. The event will be held over a weekend for the first time, making it easier for members to fit it into their schedule. We will keep you posted about the latest updates and hope to see you in Sydney.
