RACS offers a variety of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) accredited activities, which align with the College's core competencies and reflect the Surgical Competence and Performance Guide. One of the courses offered is the Foundation Skills for Surgical Educators (FSSE) course. This interactive program is designed to enhance the teaching capabilities of surgeons involved in surgical education. It equips surgical educators with the skills to effectively train the next generation of surgeons.

Why enrol in FSSE?
FSSE is a mandatory requirement for surgeons supervising Surgical Education and Training (SET) Trainees within RACS. It provides structured learning experiences to help educators adapt to various teaching environments and ensure high-quality training for future surgeons.

Key learning outcomes
By participating in FSSE, surgeons will gain:
•    Effective teaching strategies – learn how to adapt teaching methods for different clinical settings and learner levels.
•    Techniques to overcome learning barriers – identify challenges Trainees face and develop solutions to improve their learning experience.
•    Lesson planning skills – design structured lessons with clear objectives and assessment methods.
•    Constructive feedback methods – apply Pendleton’s Feedback Model to provide clear, actionable feedback to Trainees.
•    Assessment of non-technical skills – evaluate essential competencies like communication and teamwork.
•    Self-reflection and continuous improvement – enhance personal teaching approaches for long-term professional growth.

Who should take this course?
FSSE is designed for surgeons involved in teaching, especially those who have recently taken on a supervisory role. It supports RACS’ commitment to professionalism and patient safety by ensuring surgical educators are well-equipped to foster a positive and effective learning environment.

CPD accreditation
Participants receive seven (CPD) hours, which contributes to their ongoing professional education.

Enrol today
By completing FSSE, surgeons can refine their teaching practices, contribute to a culture of excellence in surgical education, and play a pivotal role in shaping future surgical professionals.
