It has been one of the greatest honours of my career to represent the voice of my fellow surgeons across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand as president of RACS. The past two years have been both rewarding and, at times, challenging. However, I have never felt alone in this role. I have been supported by my fellow Councillors, our dedicated volunteers, RACS staff, and—most importantly—our membership.
Building foundations for the future
Among the many achievements during my tenure at RACS, one of the most significant has been restoring the College to a sound financial footing. This was no easy task. It required swift and decisive fiscal measures and, crucially, the support of our members in accepting a strengthened governance structure that ensures our long-term sustainability.
Securing accreditation for surgical training and education for the next three years is another milestone we should take great pride in. This success was a testament to the power of collaboration, with the College, surgical societies and associations working together to advance surgical education, training, quality and standards.
Beyond our borders
Beyond these institutional achievements, I have also had the privilege of representing RACS on the global stage. Serving as an ambassador for our College in discussions with other medical colleges around the world, particularly in the Asia Pacific and Great Britain, has been rewarding. My work with the Council of Presidents of Medical Colleges (CPMC) has reinforced the importance of a unified voice in medical advocacy, and I look forward to continuing that work in my role as chair elect of CPMC.
A particular highlight has been our progress in rural and regional health—an issue I have long been passionate about. Seeing cross-party agreement secured for rural selection and celebrating the launch of the Northern Territory Rural Training Pathway were defining moments for me. These steps forward give me real hope for the future of rural health equity.
The power of partnership
None of this would have been possible without the support of those around me. I must acknowledge the exceptional leadership of our CEO, Stephanie Clota. Since stepping into the role in January 2024, she has quickly strengthened the College’s strategic direction, modernised operations, and brought greater transparency. Her focus on member value and unifying the surgical sector is already making a difference, and I have every confidence in her continued success.
I also want to express my sincere gratitude to Professor Owen Ung. Throughout the past two years, he has been a steadfast and supportive colleague, and I have valued his wisdom and kindness. I would also like to thank Dr Adrian Anthony in his role as Censor-in-Chief who has worked tirelessly in the Education space at RACS.
In May, I will proudly hand over the presidency to Owen in Sydney, knowing that the College is in safe and capable hands. It has been a privilege to serve you as President, and I thank you all for your ongoing trust and support.
Warm regards,
Associate Professor Kerin Fielding
President
