Pharmaceutical benefit schemes
Australian Pharmaceuticals Benefit Scheme overview
Through the Pharmaceuticals Benefit Scheme (PBS), the Australian government subsidises the cost of listed prescription medicine, making it more affordable for all Australians.
Approximately 80% of prescriptions are subsidised by the PBS.
A PBS prescriber number is required to prescribe medicine under the PBS. It is administered by Medicare.
The prescriber number uniquely identifies authorised prescribers and remains the same throughout a prescriber's career. It is not linked to a specific location like a Medicare provider number.
