Overview

There are three pathways for admission to Fellowship of the College:

• by examination (Surgical Trainees)
• by examination (Specialist International Medical Graduates or SIMGs)
• by assessment (Specialist International Medical Graduates or SIMGs).

Trainees and SIMGs who have met the criteria for Fellowship initiate applications by submitting a completed application form. The minimum timeframe for an application to be approved and admission kit sent to the applicant, after the initial applications has been received by the College, is 3-4 weeks. Fellowship will then be confirmed in writing once the applicant has completed the necessary forms and full payment has been made and receipted. Expedited applicants, in addition, need to wait until after their training completion date and final approval from the Committee before Fellowship can be confirmed.

To be eligible for admission to Fellowship applicants must have successfully completed the following requirements for each pathway.

By examination (for SET Trainees):

Successful completion of the RACS Fellowship Examination in the relevant specialty and all other components of a College Surgical Education and Training program.

By examination (for SIMGs):

Successful completion of the RACS Fellowship Examination in the relevant specialty, the RACS Operating With Respect eLearning module and any/all other components of a designated period supervision in accordance with the RACS IMG policies and the specialist assessment of Specialist International Medical Graduates.

By assessment (for SIMGs):

Successful completion of all components of a designated period of clinical assessment under supervision oversight in accordance with the College policies on the specialist assessment of Specialist International Medical Graduates and the RACS Operating With Respect eLearning module.

Applicants who are undertaking a Surgical Education and Training program and who satisfy the following requirements may be eligible for the expedited application pathway. Applicants must:

• be in their final term of the Surgical Education and Training program; and
• have successfully completed all other components of the Surgical Education and Training program including the Fellowship Examination; and
• have received satisfactory In Training Assessment reports for all terms undertaken in the 18 months prior to the scheduled completion date; and
• submit a satisfactory mid-term In Training Assessment report for the current term.

Applicants for the expedited pathway may submit an application two monthly cycles prior to their scheduled completion date. Applications will be processed as per the approval process and timeline. Fellowship will be granted to successful applicants after their scheduled completion date and pending final approval from the Committee in Surgical Education and Training.
