Become a TIPS Instructor

The TIPS course aims to teach junior doctors, surgical Trainees and IMGs the importance of non-technical skills for safe and effective surgical practice. Through interactive lectures, small groups activities and immersive simulation scenarios involving professional actors, participants learn skills in patient-centred communication and teamwork within a clinical setting.

TIPS is a two-day course conducted for 12 participants with a faculty of eight instructors.

Teaching on Skills Training courses enables RACS Fellows to claim 1 CPD point per hour, with a maximum of 30 per annum.

Surgeons from all specialties and other medical professionals in a relevant field are welcome to apply to become a TIPS instructor. Please register your interest by:

• Ensuring minimum eligibility criteria is met checking against the course pre-requisites
• Completing the instructor application form (PDF 78.94KB)
• Submitting form to [email protected]
• All applications to be considered by the TIPS committee

• Surgeons, anaesthetists, intensivists and emergency physicians
• Medical professionals in relevant field with interest and/or experience in teaching non-technical competencies
• Have experience and an interest in non-technical skills development

• Attend a TIPS Provider course as an observer to gain an understanding of the course objectives, content and delivery methods
• Attend a TIPS instructor training workshop
• Teach on a TIPS course as an instructor candidate to achieve instructor status
• Teach a minimum of one course per year to maintain instructor status
